OFFICIAL LEAGUE RULES — 2026
Revised and consolidated for the 2026 season
These rules are intended to provide a consistent, fair, and enjoyable recreational volleyball experience for
all teams. Team captains are responsible for understanding and enforcing these rules with their players.
1. GENERAL RULES
Alcohol Policy
• Alcohol is not permitted outside the designated gated area or deck.
• Anyone caught bringing alcohol onto 12 North property, including the parking lot or back area, will be
ejected from the league.
• All alcoholic beverages must be consumed only within the designated gated area or on the deck.
Home Team
• The home team chooses which side of the court to play on and which volleyball will be used.
2. GAME RULES
Determining the First Serve
• The first serve will be determined by a volley.
• Teams will alternate serving first in each subsequent game of the match.
Scoring
• All games use rally scoring.
• Regular-season games are played to 21 points.
• A team must win by 2 points. If the score reaches 20–20, play continues until one team has a 2-point
lead.
Time-Outs
• Each team is allowed two 30-second time-outs per game.
Between Games
• Teams have a maximum of 5 minutes between games so matches remain on schedule.
Late Arrivals and Forfeits
• Teams have 15 minutes after the scheduled start time to arrive.
• If a team has not arrived within 15 minutes, it forfeits the first game.
• If the team arrives after the 15-minute mark, it may still play the remaining two games; the first game is
recorded as a forfeit.
• This rule does not apply when a team is playing a previously scheduled make-up game on another court.

Fouls
• The following are considered fouls: touching or hanging on the net; making more than three contacts
before returning the ball; interfering with an opposing player, including going underneath the net and
causing a collision; attacking the serve by spiking or otherwise aggressively returning the ball directly
from the serve; and carrying or holding the ball.
3. TEAM ROSTERS AND PLAYER ELIGIBILITY
Roster Size and Court Requirements
• Each team may have a maximum of 10 players on its roster.
• A maximum of 6 players may be on the court at one time.
• Teams may play with up to 4 men and 2 women, or 4 men and 1 woman, depending on the number of
players available.
• At least one female player must be on the court at all times. Failure to meet this requirement will result in
a forfeit.
• Each team must have at least one female player registered on its roster.
• A team may not bring in a different female player from another team each week solely to meet the
female-player requirement.
Roster Submission and Deadlines
• Team rosters must be submitted before the first scheduled game.
• For the fall season, rosters must be finalized by Week 3.
• For the summer season, rosters must be finalized by Week 6.
• Once the applicable deadline has passed, changes or additions are subject to league approval.
Multiple Teams
• A player may be listed on only one team roster per night.
4. REFEREE REQUIREMENTS
Referee Assignments
• Each referee assignment requires two people, or at least one person when necessary, to report for the
assigned game.
• Teams are responsible for making sure their assigned referee shift is covered.
• Failure to report for a designated referee shift will result in 3 losses being added to the team's overall
season record.
• The exception is when the team is playing a scheduled game on another court or when the league has a
weather delay that affects the assignment.

5. REGULAR-SEASON STANDINGS
Tiebreakers
• At the end of the regular season, ties in the standings will be broken in the following order:
• 1. Number of wins.
• 2. Total points scored.
• 3. Head-to-head record.
6. PLAYOFF RULES
Playoff Eligibility
• Only players who satisfy the league's roster and regular-season participation requirements may play in
the playoffs.
• A player must have participated in at least three full games during the regular season to be eligible for
the playoffs.
• For eligibility purposes, a 'full game' means a complete match consisting of all three scheduled games
played that night.
• Captains are responsible for confirming that every player participating in the playoffs is eligible.
Roster Verification
• Before each playoff match, team rosters will be available for verification.
• Each team captain is responsible for checking with the referee that the players on their team are eligible.
• The captain and referee should double-check that every player present appears on the official league
roster.
No Unregistered Players / No Ringers
• Players who have not previously played for the team during the regular season and are not listed on the
official league roster are not permitted to play in the playoffs.
• An unregistered player, commonly referred to as a 'ringer,' will not be permitted to participate.
• If an ineligible or unregistered player is brought into a playoff match, the Head of the League will be
notified and the player will be required to leave the court.
• Teams are responsible for ensuring that every player participating in a playoff match meets all roster and
eligibility requirements.
Playoff Format
• Playoff matches are best two out of three games.
• Playoff games are played to 25 points.
• A team must win by 2 points; there is no automatic win at 25 if the opponent is within one point.
Home Team
• The home team chooses which side of the court to play on and which volleyball will be used.

7. CAPTAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Team Captain Duties
• Captains are responsible for submitting and maintaining an accurate roster.
• Captains are responsible for knowing which players are eligible to participate.
• Captains are responsible for ensuring that referee assignments are covered.
• During playoffs, captains must verify player eligibility with the referee before the match begins.
• Captains are expected to communicate league rules to all players and address eligibility or roster
concerns before a match whenever possible.
8. LEAGUE ENFORCEMENT
Rule Enforcement
• The Head of the League has final authority to address eligibility issues, roster violations, forfeits, and
other disputes involving these rules.
• Questions or disputes should be brought to the Head of the League as soon as possible rather than
being allowed to escalate during play.
• The purpose of enforcement is to maintain fair competition and a positive recreational environment for all
teams.
